I, personally, think that iron-on or fusible web applique´ is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Although I love the look of traditional applique´, I just don't have the patience or the time.
My product of choice is Wonder-Under®. I have had great success with it and it is readily available. There are many terrific fusible web products out there and the instructions are similar. You may choose another. If so, be sure you are familiar with the instructions for that particular brand.

You can quilt as you zigzag around the applique´ edges

Need to sew around edge of pieces in some fashion
Adds bulk and stiffness to fabric layers
Process:
With a pencil, trace pattern piece onto paper side of Wonder-Under® leaving approximately 1/2" between pieces. Cut each piece out approximately 1/4" from traced line.
When you are sure of your fabric selection you are ready to fuse your pieces. Place the rough side of the Wonder-Under® piece against the WRONG side of the fabric. Press for 5 seconds with a hot, dry iron. (photo A)

When cool, cut each of these fused pieces out on the traced line and slowly peel off the paper backing. These pieces are now ready to fuse into their final position.
Position the fusible fabric pieces web side down on the project. (Since they won't budge no matter how hard you try afterwards, please be sure you have them where you want them). Cover your piece or pieces with a damp pressing cloth. Set your iron to the wool setting. Press firmly for 10 seconds. If your piece is large, repeat by lifting and overlapping iron until all fabric is fused. (photo B)
